3C (Short for Christ, Cowboys, and the Coltharp's) Performance
Horses of Stephenville, Texas is home to Riata Stallions, Bet Hesa Freckledcat
"Answer" and Playen Spades "Gunner". Owners John and Kay Coltharp take pride in
their two stallions and every baby that hits the ground. Answer is a ranch raised stallion and nothing
short of a miracle for the Coltharp's.
"After our son, Caden passed, I'd lost my zeal for life,"
says Kay. "The only thing that kept me
going was Jesus and John. I hibernated. John kept buying horses, in hopes that
one would help. One day he bought me a mare, I named her Angel. She took such
good care of me. After riding her for several years, I wanted to breed her. I
searched and found 6666's stallion, Bet Hesa Cat. I wanted a red roan to match
Caden and on February 25th, the day we'd adopted Cayden years prior,
Answer was born."
Bet Hesa Freckledcat has been very successful in the roping
arena this year. At the Abilene, Texas Title Fights, John won the 8.5 World
Series Qualifier, splitting $24,870 with partner Brandon Carrell. The 2024
Riata Championships was also very successful where John won 8th in
the 9.5 Championship, 10th in the 8.5 Riata Roping, and Denton
Parish won 5th in the 14.5 Championships, adding $31,400 to his
QData and EquiStats earnings.
Kay will be competing for the World's Greatest Cowgirl title
at the 2025 Art of the Cowgirl scheduled to take place February 25-March 1 at
Rancho Rio in Wickenburg, Arizona.
"This has been on my bucket list. I'm going to go do the
best I can. It's a little different of a
discipline. God blessed me with Answer. I want to give him opportunities and
see him succeed."
Playen Spades was purchased through the AQHA World Show
Horse Sale. Steve Friskup told the Coltharp's about the horse. He is an own son
of Playgun and out of Amy Leo Cat. Playen has LTE of $120,000 and has points in
AQHA heading and heeling. His babies are great-minded, athletic, and cowy.
"Bet Hesa Freckledcat and Playen Spades take care of old
folks," Kay said. "I'm 67 and is 73. You don't find stallions that behave and
take care of us like those two do. By the Grace of God, we were able to get
them into the Riata Stallion Incentive Program."
The Colthorps currently have a weanling, 2 yr old, yearling
and 3 yr old available for purchase.
