Stevie's Big Run

It was a historical streak for Stevie Rey Von offspring starting the last week of September through the National Reined Cow Horse Association Futurity in early October. Stevie Rey team roping horses posted an impressive $238,630 in earnings at the 2024 Riata Championships and moved right on to Ft Worth collecting $350,330 at the NRCHA. Over a half million dollars in earnings were added to his already large total progeny earnings of $13,715,131.

Back at the end of 2017 Becky and Alvin Fults, of Amarillo, TX, made history when they sold Metallic Cat for the largest transaction in the cutting industry. They had owned and promoted him since he was a 3-year-old. "It was an emotional day for us", said Becky Fults. "That horse was our whole life for nine years. It was the biggest and hardest decision of our lives." Everyone pretty well conceded that Metallic was a once-in- lifetime horse, permanently impacting the cutting industry, and getting close to duplicating that might not ever happen. The Fults announced they would take a break from cutting.

It didn't take long for that break to end. Metallic Cat sold in September but by February everything changed when they realized they had a chance to purchase a proven son of Metallic Cat. They jumped up and bought Stevie Rey Von (out of Miss Ella Rey x Dual Rey) when he became available. The 2012 red roan stallion had already earned a special place in their hearts by becoming Metallic Cat's first NCHA Futurity Open Champion. "We always had a connection to that horse [Stevie Rey Von] because he was Metallic's first Futurity Champion, "Fults said. "His dam was being shown the same time as Metallic.  We got to watch the colt grow and followed his career."

When the Riata Championships ended the word got back to Amarillo quickly.  Stevie Rey Von was the top stallion with earnings of $238,630. "Some of the guys with his offspring were really wanting me to get him in the Riata," said the ex-calf roper. "I him hawed around. I didn't know if he (Stevie Rey Von) was established enough. What a pleasant surprise I got after the Riata. Guys were calling me, saying, 'You missed it!'. To see how great the horses did was exciting."

The biggest story of the 2024 event was Stevie Rey Von moving from 40th to 10th in QData's Top Roping Sires for ALL-TIME list. He still has ways to go to catch ole dad, Metallic Cat holding that top spot with nearly 40 more money earners than any other stallion on the list (108). On the other hand, Stevie Rey moved to the 10th all time with the least number of money earners (16), nearly all from this years' Riata. Stevie Rey Von has a long way to go to catch up to his sire, but it's pretty clear the Fults are once again in the driver's seat.
